Hello AnimSchool friends!
We at AnimSchool provide some of our characters for your enjoyment and use! Most non-AnimSchool students may use them with some restrictions, detailed on the legal agreement on the following page. These are the main points:
-You can use Malcolm for most any educational or commercial purpose, except,
-You can't use Malcolm or any modification of Malcolm for assignments at another online school or classes, or online component of a traditional, in-person school.
-You have to attribute each time you use Malcolm in the credits or on screen during a presentation: “Malcolm character courtesy of AnimSchool.com”
-You can't give Malcolm to others, including modified versions or parts. (Does not include Synoptics/Picker GUIs. Users may edit and distribute those separately as desired.)
-You CAN modify Malcolm in any way.
-If you want to offer a modification of Malcolm to others (for example, a different outfit, etc.), you have to send it to us for distribution.
-You can't use Malcolm for any content which is is pornographic, sexually explicit, lewd, obscene, or excessively violent, promotes or condones illegal activities, or incites hate or violence against an ethnic, religious, or protected group.
-You CAN use Malcolm for your demo reel.
Note for schools: If a (traditional) school teacher or administrator would like to allow multiple students to use the AnimSchool character files, they must agree to the license terms on behalf of the school, and ensure the students in the program follow the terms of the license agreement. Accordingly, the students must be aware not to take the characters outside of the school without getting their own license. The school teacher or administrator should list the school entity and address in the license registration process.
On this page, you can see the different versions currently available. Click on the link at the bottom of the page below to proceed to the agreement page.
We only allow several hundred downloads of our characters per month. (the first limit is 500). If the number of downloads has reached the limit, try again in a week or two when we reset the count. This number turned out to be far too low. We are resetting the number to 2000 downloads per month.
"What about using Malcolm for sponsored contests like 11-second club?" That is an allowed use for AnimSchool rigs.

abxPicker for Maya
Before using the Maya versions, first install abxPicker. abxPicker is a GUI to select parts of the character or run scripts.
abxPicker is provided to you for free courtesy of Adam Burke. These files are provided by the permission of the author, Adam Burke, to users of AnimSchool character rigs, and their use is covered by their own license. For more information, see: http://www.creativecrash.com/users/j-adam-burke
(This is an edited version from the one now available on creativecrash.com, which allows relative pathnames to the background images.)
Installation Instructions:
unzip the abxPicker folder within the zip file for your Maya version.
put the abxPicker.mel and abxPicker.png files into your Maya version's script folder. For example:
C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents\maya\2011\scripts
on Mac computers:
/Users/YOURNAME/Library/Preferences/Autodesk/maya/2011/scripts
Then inside Maya, run this command:
source "abxPicker.mel"; abxPicker;
Put that command on a button, so you can quickly relaunch it.
You may have to restart Maya to get it to see the script.

Malcolm v1.00 for Maya 2009
Installation Instructions:
Install abxPicker. Follow the instruction above.
Unzip malcolm_v100Maya2009.zip (or the current filename)
put the *picker.bmp file into your project's "images" directory (folder). (The picture that looks like malcolm.)
Reference the file malcolm.ma, then import the malcolmPicker.ma file:
Place the malcolm.ma file in a known location.
File>Create Reference. Point it to the malcolm.ma file
next import the MalcolmPicker.ma file into the same scene:
rename the Main_PIKR to malcolm:Main_PIKR (or if using multiple Malcolm's, malcolm1: macolm2 etc.)
(Known issue: background image does not display on Macintosh computers.) NOTE:
On Mac computers, we recommend importing the reference. This
breaks the connection with the character souce file (and you can no
longer easily update the character file). We have heard some users
experience a problem with referenced files, where the scene has
difficulty loading or becomes slow.
To import the reference, open the Reference Editor and do
File>Import Objects From Reference.
Now open abxPicker to select the controls.
