3D animation is the process of bringing characters to life with believable weight, movement and personality. Students enrolled in the 3D Animation program at AnimSchool are expertly guided by some of the best 3D animators in the business. The creators of AnimSchool have designed the 3D Animation Program to help students master the skills they need to be part of this creative industry.

Unlike a traditional college, students at AnimSchool take only those courses directly related to becoming a working animator in the world of advertising, television series, games, visual effects and feature films.

    Prerequisite Courses


    Introduction to Maya

    The first step for animation students is to learn the basics of the 3D software program. Students must be familiar with Autodesk Maya before starting our programs, or they can take this preparatory course. During this term, students will explore all the basics of Maya, learning the interface and how to create objects, as well as animating, rendering, lights, cameras, primitives, heirarchies, and grouping.

    Introduction to 3D Animation

    Students learn how to give objects and simple characters believable motion while practicing techniques for 3D animation workflow. Student learn the essential foundations of all animation: timing, arcs, spacing and how to create the illusion of weight.

    Animating Characters

    This course explores the mechanics of biped character locomotion. Student learn how to make a full character walk, run, interact with weight, pose naturally, and move in a convincing way. These skills are the basis of all advanced animation. Before learning acting skills, the student must master body mechanics.

    Body Mechanics

    In the Body Mechanics class, students learn how to make biped characters move in two exercises, with an emphasis on balance, direction changes, action, realistic force, and IK/FK switching. Student also learn quadruped locomotion, animating a dog walk.

    Body Acting

    This course offers insight into the art of pantomime acting to bring an animated character to life. This is when students’ creativity is unleashed. Using simple characters, students learn storytelling, acting essentials, and how to stage a performance for the audience.

    Character Performance

    In this class, students are now ready to use AnimSchool’s famous advanced characters and bring them to life in a dialogue acting shot. Students learn lip synch, advanced posing and animation. AnimSchool excels at expressive character animation -- students learn how to get the most compelling performance from the 3D characters.

    Facial Performance

    During this term, students animate a close-up shot to learn convincing facial acting. Students learn how to make the audience believe their character’s emotions. Instructors work with students to help them use appealing facial posing and achieve a high level of refinement in the performance.

    Animating Appeal and Entertainment

    Now that students have approached all the elements of animating, this final master-level class helps students making the best acting choices and then polish their animation to the highest levels, so students will be in demand by employers.
Gaming Animation Option

For students interested in entering the gaming industry, AnimSchool offers a game animation emphasis. Student can take these courses instead of the last three in the animation program:

    Introduction to Game Animation

    Animators learn what it takes to work in the ever-changing gaming industry and how make assignments set in a game development environment. Students learn game theory, engines, and a basic understanding of pipeline. Students create player and enemy animations, using AnimSchool's game character rigs.

    Game Animation Pipeline

    Students learn about working within a game development pipeline using Unity, while exploring new animation states that broaden their technical abilities. Students expand their moveset of player and enemy animations like pushing/pulling, climbing, and more.

    Advanced Game Animation

    Students learn how to work with game cinematic animations, and all the differences from game-play animation. Students learn camera cuts and camera animation and how to engage the audience with the game’s story being highlighted in the cinematic.
